Today I managed to finish post-processing a set of photographs from The Melodramatics' production of The Secret Garden.
This was a first-rate production, which I really enjoyed, but it was very dark. Not metaphorically dark, dark as in ISO 1600 throughout, long shutter speeds and F/2.2. Yes, I had to go to the 50mm f/1.8 prime.
The little lens did very well. It had a tough job on its hands and it coped admirably. But using a prime was a challenge. The staging wasn't a traditional pros arch, but rather the performance space was level with the audience, and there were only about two or three rows of seats.
Essentially, I missed some pictures that I would have got with a the 24-105mm. But I got a lot that I would never have managed with the slower lens.
The 50mm f/1.8 ("nifty fifty" to its friends) may be the cheapest Canon lens available, but it's a fine fellow none the less!
